Human Zoo – Handling Tough People in the Workplace Jungle

Taming the Workplace Jungle: Managing Challenging Personalities

Workplace relationships often feel like navigating a human zoo. Each individual, like each animal, has unique traits, behaviours and needs that must be understood and respected for the entire system to function smoothly.

A zookeeper recognizes the distinct habits of each species to create a safe, productive environment. Similarly, leaders and team members must adapt their communication and collaboration styles to accommodate diverse personalities.

This one-day workshop is a training ground for navigating your own professional zoo. It helps you recognize and respond effectively to the wide range of personality types. A skilled zookeeper learns how to approach a cautious gazelle differently than a curious monkey or a territorial lion. Similarly, you’ll gain tools to identify what motivates each individual and how to communicate in ways that suit their natural tendencies.

Don’t miss the chance to sharpen your relationship skills and bring greater harmony into the team. By the end, you’ll be equipped to manage and thrive amongst many different personalities, including the high energy extroverts, quiet thinkers, detail focused planners, big picture dreamers and others.

Course Objectives
  • Recognize and adapt to different personality types for improved communication and collaboration.
  • Discover practical communication techniques, using appropriate language, gestures, and phrasing.
  • Build empathy and emotional intelligence by understanding others’ perspectives.
  • Take responsibility for your own behaviour and your responses in challenging interactions, for more positive outcomes.
Course Outline

Module 1: Understand the human zoo and different personality types at work. Introduction to personality using the DOPE (bird) model. How diverse types interact under pressure.

Module 2: Identify species at the professional zoo by relating human traits to animals. Adapt your style for better collaboration and communication. Work with others more effectively, even if you find their personalities difficult.

Module 3: Words that work and practical communication tools. Why language matters: choosing the right words and gestures.

Module 4: Seeing through others’ eyes to build empathy. Practice taking the perspective of others and learn emotional intelligence strategies.

Module 5: Changing yourself and your responses. Why expecting others to change doesn’t work: a leopard cannot change its spots. Creating space so you can respond to professional complexity rather than react to immediate stimulus.

Module 6: Giving an A to anyone: a positive reinforcement model. The art of complimenting and recognizing others. Practice giving and receiving authentic positive feedback.
